The Raspberry Pi was originally created to introduce and promote basic IT skills in schools. It has been a much bigger success than expected. It primarily offers Debian-based Linux for download, but other operating systems can also be installed. The Python and Scratch programming languages are primarily promoted. By default the firmware is closed source, but there is also an unofficial open source firmware available.
